Callous Player by R.C. Stephens is the third book in the Westfall U series. This book is about Declan and Poppy's story.
Declan is carrying a lot on his shoulders and it's wearing him down. The lies that he keeps and the secrets he possesses from his past has become too much to bear and is affecting his performance on the ice and a chance to be drafted to the NHL. He's known to be callous, aloof and distant.
Poppy is a freshman at Westfall U and is determined to major in journalism and covet the editor spot before she graduates. Poppy wants to get out of her brother's protective hold and find friends, branch out of her cocoon and finally kiss a guy for the first time.
A chance meeting between the two ends up with each one disclosing a secret thinking they'd never see each other again. Poppy tells Declan that she's never been kissed. Declan shares a secret that he has never told anyone, including his best friends.
Poppy is given the task of writing the coveted spotlight story for the college newspaper. The subject just happens to be Declan McAvoy. Writing the spotlight story on Declan proves to be a difficult task as Declan is not at all forthcoming and his secrets prevent him from sharing too much. They end up spending more and more time together just to try and find something Poppy can write about.
The more time they spend, the stronger the attraction becomes. The stronger the attraction, the bigger the problem. Especially, when the he realizes that Poppy is Dec's best friend, Ryse's, sister. Being together can pose an unbalance within the hockey team, a chance to solidify a place in the newspaper, a brother-sister bond that has been unbreakable so far, and friendships that could end a special brotherhood within their circle.
Their journey together is relatable for so many and their struggles tug at our hearts. It's a beautiful story that is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. It's about finding forgiveness, about knowing your self worth, gaining independence and accepting help.
I have loved every page of Westfall U so far. It has been a fun and entertaining read for me and really instilled my love for college/sports romance books. I am excited to continue with the journey and hope it comes sooner than later.
I hope you try the Westfall U series and let me know how you like it.
Here I am with my soul dog and book buddy, Pippa, at the top of the picture and my daughter's best dog, Jethro aka Big Jet.
Pippa gives Callous Player by R.C. Stephens a 5 licks rating with a side of Nestle Crunch bar, which is my favorite.
