The Ritual by Shantel Tessier. I quite honestly don't know how I feel about it. I had mixed feelings throughout the whole book.
It definitely captured my interest and it has a 4 1/2 star rating by the thousands so it definitely had the appeal.
The plot and storyline was intriguing and extremely dark. I like the secret society part of the plot and most assuredly delivered.
This is certainly a huge trigger book for many reasons. I would have to say this book is the most risque book that I have ever read so far.
It surely pushes the envelope and can be offensive to some. This is one of those that you would have to have a certain affinity to get through the story. There were several times that I asked myself if I could go on reading and did become uncomfortable every so often..
The sex scenes are violent and abundant, that felt a bit redundant for my taste. I think the author could have emitted a few of them and it would have been fine. It had key instances in between a lot of sex scenes. If you like a lot of those dominating scenes, you will most likely like this book.
I was about to give up on the book around 70% in, but made myself keep reading since I had invested so much time into it. I will say that I'm glad I did. Things got more exciting in the end and it revealed a lot. It didn't just answer the questions I had throughout the book, but it brought up a few things that came as a surprise. The twists gave me whiplash as it had me questioning so many things.
Ryat dominated the relationship from the get go. He started as an unemotional, entitled, domineering man. He's over protective, decisive and driven. He knows his goals and will do whatever it takes to get it. He's ruthless when he needs to be, which is pretty much always.
Blakely was a bit of a disappointment for me. She had no strength of character in my opinion. She wanted to be dominated and I felt she needed more backbone. There were scenes where she was unconscious...so be forewarned. If you're looking for a strong female character, you may want to skip this book.
So, I really am not sure how I feel about it. There are parts that I liked... There are parts that I didn't. But it's really all about what you're comfortable with. I'm good with a little rough sexy scenes, but it was a bit much for me. I've only started reading spicier books recently so that is most definitely a factor. If you've read a few of these, then it could be right up your alley.
For me personally, the storyline is around a 3.75 star rating. The steam factor was off the Richter Scale. I just really think it was a bit much on the sexy scenes and could have been shorter as it felt like it dragged a bit in the middle.
